About

Dr. Edi Kurniawan, S.T., M.Eng. received his B.Eng. degree (cumlaude) from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia (2003), M.Eng. from the University of Adelaide, Australia (2009), and PhD from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia (2013) in control systems — with thesis: Robust Repetitive Control and its Applications.”

He is currently a Research Professor (Peneliti Ahli Utama) at the Control and Precision Measurement Research Group, Research Center for Photonics-BRIN, Serpong. His research interests include learning control, robust control, machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence for photonics.

He is a 2018 Fulbright Scholar at Northern Arizona University (USA), a 2016/2017 US-ASEAN Science & Technology Fellow placed at the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Menristekdikti), and an Asian Science Diplomat (ASD) 2021. He received the BRIN Best Researcher Award 2023 for research achievements in 2022, representing the Nanotechnology and Materials Research Organization.

During his academic career, he spent time as a visiting research fellow at CERN (2014, Switzerland), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (2015, Australia), Swinburne University of Technology (2015, Australia), and Technische Universität Berlin (2015, Germany).

He currently serves as a guest editor and reviewer for more than 35 top-tier journals indexed by Web of Science, and contributes as a committee member for several international conferences. With research interests spanning control theory, machine learning, and AI for photonics, he continues to explore AI-driven solutions for sustainable agriculture, advanced sensing, and next-generation control systems — while actively mentoring students and fostering international collaborations.
